Perfect Movies For Your Next Girls Night
We all know the classic girls' night movies like Legally Blonde or Miss Congeniality, but what if you want something different for your next movie night? I got you covered! Here are ten suggestions!
1. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
This is one of those movies that you can watch together with your mom, without any awkwardness, you know? Still, the movie stars many beautiful people to look at and the storyline is very sweet. The whole movie is about a writer who learns about a book club from the island Guernsey that started during the second world war. After corresponding with several members, she decides to finally visit the island. And of course, drama ensues.
2. Hidden Figures
Okay, this is a long watch. The movie is well over two hours, but it's worth it, I promise. It tells the story of the people that worked on the space launch, without much credit afterward. The main character is a black female mathematician. And dear lord, the racism and the sexism that she and women like her had to deal with is crazy. The story is both interesting and motivating. And you'll have plenty to chat about with your friends when you finish the movie!
3. The Intern
This is one of my favorite movies. It's about an elderly man who gets a job as an intern for a fashion company. He is eager to work hard and learn. (Played by Robert De Niro, who makes the character all the more likable). But, Anne Hathaway plays a busy CEO who does not want him around. The whole 'senior intern' is a very funny premise, so the movie is a comedy but also has enough wholesome drama to keep you entertained for an evening.
4. Letters to Juliet
Even though this is a girl's night classic as a romantic comedy, I feel not enough people have seen it. So I will recommend it to you anyway. Sophie is on a pre-honeymoon with a fiance who couldn't care less about her. In Verona, there is a wall where people leave letters to Juliet. Sophie finds out that a group of women actually answer these letters and she joins them. A lot of things happen when she answers old letters found in the wall and one of them might just result in a romantic adventure!
5. The Age of Adaline
This movie has romance (check) but, it's probably not the way you expect it. The story is about a woman who has never aged. Not the easiest thing when you are trying to find love... The movie is quite dark, but I found it to be fascinating and thought it was still a very sweet story. Also, it's fun to imagine what you and your friends would do in that situation!
6. Home Again
Another slightly weird romcom. I still don't know what to think of this movie, but hey, I enjoyed watching it, so maybe you will too! It's about a mother going wild when she meets a younger man who is interested in her. His friends become family friends and soon things get complicated. As we need on a girls night: DRAMA.
7. The Art of Racing in the Rain
This might be a weird question, but do you want to bawl your eyes out together for a night? This is the movie for you. It's beautiful, sweet, wonderful, and heartbreaking. It follows the life of a dog and the lives of the people around him. Trust me, this is not some tail-wagging doggie movie. The point of view of the dog is such a great way to tell the story of the people around him over time!
8. On the Basis of Sex
Another historical female power movie. This movie is about the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (may she rest in peace.) It has politics, university drama, and just a whole lot of inspiration. Even if you don't agree with her policies, this movie is all about how hard she worked and how she got where she wanted to be.
9. Gifted
This is a feel-good movie if I ever saw one. It's about a young girl who turns out to be very gifted. Suddenly, a family member who hasn't seen her wants to claim her, and everyone seems to want a piece of her. She navigates this life-changing event with her uncle, whom she lives with. It's wonderful to watch characters who belong together be together. Just a very wholesome movie all around!
10. What happened to Monday (also called 'Seven Sisters')
None of these movies will satisfy you if you want something more like a thriller. If that's the case, this one is for you! In an alternative/futuristic universe, people are only allowed to have one child (among other scary shit going on). But, there is a family that has seven kids. Seven daughters, who all share a single identity to the outside world. They all get to live that life one day a week, the rest they stay hidden. But one day one of them disappears, they set out to find what happened to Monday, without being found out as a family with seven children.
11. Amelie
Although this movie is French and is somewhat hard to find available with subtitles: it's absolutely worth watching if you can get your hands on it! A sweet, quirky, classical fun movie. Especially great when everyone feels like 'They just want to see something fresh and different'. I've never seen a movie like this one. The amazing soundtrack is also a big bonus with this movie! You'll be able to find your inner Amelie for days to come, listening to it! And it is also the perfect soundtrack for a nice cosy dinner afterwards.
That is it for now! Let me know if you have any other recommendations in the comments!
